Why your brand is invisible to ChatGPT (and what to do about it)

Buyers increasingly ask an assistant before they search. Here is how AI models decide which brands to name, and the concrete work that gets you into that answer.

We found this out the uncomfortable way. In August 2026 we asked several AI assistants to recommend Shopify agencies in Medellín. Our own agency did not appear in a single answer.

We had a live site. We had real clients with live stores. We had a blog. None of it mattered, because none of it was the kind of signal these systems actually use.

How assistants decide who to name

An assistant answering “who should I hire for X in Y” is not reading your homepage and forming an opinion. It is doing some combination of three things:

  1. Recalling what was in its training data — which means text written about you, on sites that are not yours.
  2. Running a live search and reading the top results, which are usually directories, listicles and review platforms rather than vendor sites.
  3. Resolving you as an entity — matching a name to a known organization with attributes it can verify.

Notice that your own website is the weakest of the three inputs. Anyone can claim anything on their own site, and these systems are built knowing that.

The three gaps that keep brands invisible

Gap 1: you are not an entity yet

An entity is a thing the system can identify unambiguously and attach facts to. To become one you need consistent, machine-readable identity across sources: the same legal name, the same address, the same contact details, and structured data that says explicitly what kind of organization you are.

The single highest-leverage field here is sameAs in your organization schema. It is the list of profiles that prove you are who you say you are. And it has to be correct — pointing it at a profile that does not exist is worse than leaving it out, because it fails verification.

We had exactly that problem: our schema listed a LinkedIn page that had never been created, and a TikTok handle with a typo. Both were quietly damaging the thing we were trying to build.

Gap 2: nobody else has written about you

Training data is other people’s text. If your only mentions are on your own domain, you are a claim without a corroborating source.

This is not about buying links. It is about being genuinely present where your category is discussed: agency directories, platform partner listings, review platforms, and industry publications. These are slow, unglamorous and they are what actually moves the needle.

Gap 3: your content answers keywords, not questions

Classic SEO rewards pages built around a search term. Generative systems quote passages that answer a complete question with specifics — numbers, conditions, tradeoffs, and an explicit statement of when something does not apply.

A page that says “we offer excellent Shopify development” is unquotable. A page that says “a professional Shopify build in Colombia runs 6 to 15 million pesos, and below that range you are usually getting a purchased theme without measurement” is quotable, because it contains a checkable claim.

What the work actually looks like

  • Fix the entity layer. Organization schema with a verified sameAs, consistent naming everywhere, structured data for services with real prices.
  • Build third-party presence. Directories and partner listings relevant to your category, with matching details.
  • Publish content designed to be cited. Specific figures, stated conditions, explicit limits. Write the sentence you would want quoted.
  • Measure it. Ask the assistants the questions your buyers would ask, on a schedule, and record whether you appear and how you are described.

That last point matters more than it sounds. There is no dashboard for this yet. The measurement is running the queries yourself and writing down what came back.

Why we talk about this openly

We sell AI visibility as a service. We are also, at the time of writing, still working through our own gaps — the third-party presence takes months and there is no shortcut.

We would rather tell you that than imply we solved something we are still doing. If an agency tells you they can get you into AI answers next month, ask them to show you their own.
